Very excited about this service. For $4 a month, I get 40Gb on online storage for my music files (currently 28Gb worth) which acts for me as a backup PLUS there is an iPhone app that will let you display the library and stream the music to your phone!

This saves 13 Gb of space on my iPhone (more room for movies/tv) and individual songs download very fast over 3G. LOVING IT!

I put ununtu on a USB stcik and use it on a laptop I pretty much have to dedicate to another purpose. But when I boot from the USB stick, it's like a whole new computer. I downloaded Chrome for Ubuntu and with browser sync, it configures itself to match my home desktop. No difference except for Netflix (no Silverlight plugin for Ubuntu, so Netflix does not support streaming video) Other than that I could not be more happy thus far. It's like I have two laptops in one!

This is crazy but I just spent 15 minutes watching this video six times and then practicing on a t-shirt of my own. I don't have the exact perportions figured out yet but this seems to work great. Maybe if I understood Japanese I would know what to look for on that first fold.

A friend asked me to send links to some of the free software I use for Windows. There's a lot out there, and you can do almost anything with free software as you can with purchased software. Here is a copy of my message:

Star Office $70 from sun.com or download free from http://google.com/pack just uncheck all other programs (cause they're crap) except Star Office and it will downloand and install in one step. Google has special agreement with Sun to give this away for free.

Many good, free programs at http://portableapps.com/ - for your computer or they will download to a USB drive and you can take them with you and use on any computer. Check out GIMP which is a Photoshop-type program and Inkscape which is an Illustrator-type program. Also InfraRecorder for CD burning. And VNC Media Player which plays alomst any video file format.

Free PDF creating program - Ive used it for a long time and it works well but lately something is causing it to crash. Try it and see if it works for you http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pdfcreator/PDFCreator-0_9_3_GPLGhostscript.exe?modtime=1156491273&big_mirror=0

Also FoxIt PDF Viewer (just Google it) is way better and faster than having the bloated Adobe Acrobat Reader.

I read alot of news articles on the Web. One of the more annoying parts of reading long articles online are sites that split an article into 2, 3, or more pages. This is partly so they can feed you more ads and generate more page views. Web experts also claim people don't want to scroll down more than 2 or 3 screen's worth of information. (I don't really believe that, but whatever.)

Well here's a tip I've learned to get the entire article on screen at once. A bonus is that the article is displayed with fewer or no ads at all!

Usually articles have an Email This Story link. Look for that link, in the same area is a Print Article link.

The Print Article link usually opens the entire article in a new window, with a layout where the text flows easily and no ads!

URL Linker I didn't relaize how much I used this little javascript I wrote until I took my site offline for redesign. From time to time I get direct URLs to images and videos. Especially with the videos, it's hard to save it to your computer if the link you receive opens using Media Player or whatever. The script doesn't open the file for you. Instead it creates a Web page with a link that you can then use Internet Explorer's "Save Target As" command to right-click the link and save the file to your hard drive.

I just installed this linux distribution on my HP 8674D, the computer I received from Delta's Wired Workforce program a few years ago. It's a Pavillion, P3 667 mHz with 384 gigs of RAM and a 60 gig HDD. This distro is the free version of Linspire. For home users I would recommend Linspire since it's so inexpensive and you get better support along the way. One thing I liked about Freespire is that the installation CD (that you make from a downloaded iso of Freespire) is bootable and you can actually run the OS from the CD-ROM drive without ever touching the hard disk. I think there are some great possibilities here for public computers or low-cost computers that have little or no HDD but instead use a high speed internet connection for Web-based applications. Gaze upon your branded logo for the last time.
Close all browser windows.
Go to Start, choose Run, and type or paste "rundll32 iedkcs32.dll,Clear" without the quotes.

So my OS class today covered a drinking tip I'm going to try soon. Grey Goose is good vodka but it's expensive. Cheap vodka is cheap, but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Where does the bad taste come from? Impurities in the vodka. How do you remove the impurities? A Brita filter of course! Filter it once, still tastes bad. Twice, better. A third time, perfect! And just as good as the Grey Goose. We'll see.

Microsoft Office Assistance: Send slides to Microsoft Word This is actually from Wednesday, but I have been doing this manually for a long time. So great to have it automated. I would recommend linking the slides instead of embedding them, just be sure to never move or rename the PPT file since the link will break if you send someone only the Word doc and not the PPT.
